Elk Valley
Elk Valley Water Quality Plan
The Elk Valley Water Quality Plan (EVWQP) was developed in response to concerns over the continuing development of the Elk Valley for coal mining, and its impact on the local and regional water quality and aquatic health. Teck, along with First Nations, Governments, and technical experts created the EVWQP as a strategy to address increasing concentrations of selenium, cadmium, nitrate and sulphate in the water. The EVWQP can be accessed here: Elk Valley Water Quality Plan
Environmental Monitoring Committee
The Environmental Monitoring Committee (EMC) reviews monitoring designs and reports required by Teck under its valley-wide EMA Permit #107517 and provides technical advice and input.
The Ktunaxa Nation Council (KNC) and CCRIFC have three positions on the EMC:
- KNC representative
- CCRIFC representative
- Traditional Knowledge representative
A public report on the EMC’s activities under Permit 107517 is released in the fall of each year. Copies of the 2015 and 2016 reports can be accessed using the links below:
Cumulative Effects Management Framework
The purpose of the Cumulative Effects Management Framework (CEMF) is to develop an approach to understand cumulative effects from the various industries operating in the Elk Valley. Impacts are initially assessed using five valued components:
- Westslope cutthroat trout
- Grizzly bear
- Bighorn sheep
- Mature and old growth forest
- Riparian habitat
